Hyperintensional propositions

چکیده

Propositions play a central role in contemporary semantics. On the Russellian account, propositions are structured entities containing particulars, properties and relations. This contrasts sharply with the sets-of-possible-worlds view of propositions. I’ll discuss how to extend the sets-of-worlds view to accommodate ne-grained hyperintensional contents. When this is done in a satisfactory way, I’ll argue, it makes heavy use of entities very much like Russellian tuples. The two notions of proposition become inter-de nable and inter-substitutable: they are not genuinely distinct accounts of how propositions represent what they represent. Semantic theorists may move freely between the two conceptions of what propositions are. Nevertheless, the two approaches give different accounts of the metaphysical nature of propositions. I argue that the sets-of-worlds view provides an adequate account of the nature of propositions, whereas the Russellian view cannot.

A hyperintensional criterion of irrelevance

On one important notion of irrelevance, evidence that is irrelevant in an inquiry may rationally be discarded, and attempts to obtain evidence amount to a waste of resources if they are directed at irrelevant evidence. The familiar Bayesian criterion of irrelevance, whatever its merits, is not adequate with respect to this notion. I show that a modification of the criterion due to Ken Gemes, th...

Hyperintensional Dynamic Semantics - Analyzing Definiteness with Enriched Contexts

We present a dynamic semantic theory that synthesizes aspects of de Groote’s (2006) continuation-based dynamics and Pollard’s (2008a) hyperintensional semantics. In this theory, we rely on an enriched notion of discourse context inspired by the work of Heim (1983a,b) and Roberts (1996, 2004). We show how to use this enriched context to improve on de Groote’s treatment of English definite anaphora.

Against Yagisawa’s Modal Realism

In his book Worlds and Individuals, Possible and Otherwise (2010), Takashi Yagisawa presents and argues for a novel and imaginative version of modal realism. It differs both from Lewis’s modal realism (Lewis 1986) and from actualists’ ersatz accounts (Adams 1974; Sider 2002). Yagisawa draws interesting parallels between tense and modality, and gives a metaphysics of modality which comes close t...

Hyperintensional Questions

It has been known for decades that Montague’s (1974 [1970]) possible-worlds semantics, which follows Kripke 1963 in treating worlds as unanalyzed primitives and propositions as sets of worlds, does not provide enough meaning distinctions to make correct predictions about a wide range of natural-language entailment patterns. This granularity problem, as it has come to be known, has many dimensio...
